PANDUIT today introduced the Panduit Network Infrastructure Essentials (PNIE) course to provide hands-on training and new innovation for students who are interested in successfully mastering the physical layer of a network. This course replaces the existing Fundamentals of Voice and Data Cabling course in the Cisco(R) Networking Academy(R) Program globally, providing broader content along with a globally recognized certification upon successful completion.
The PNIE course delivers innovative network infrastructure solutions with real-world experience to prepare students for future certifications. The course aligns to the Panduit Authorized Installer (PAI) global certification and covers basic cable installer knowledge, how to build and administrate the physical layer of network infrastructure, and deeper understanding of the networking devices that this layer interconnects.

The Linux Professional Institute (LPI), (http://www.lpi.org), the premier professional certification program for the Linux community, worldwide, will offer reduced price certification testing during LinuxWorld Italy on Thursday, May 26, 2005, at the Crowne Plaza Milan Linate Hotel, in San Donato Milanese (Milan, Italy).

Effective May 14, 2005, the following changes will be effective immediately at all Thomson Prometric and Pearson VUE testing centers. The changes are being made to strengthen non-disclosure policies and apply to written exams taken for any Cisco Career Certification, including CCIE written qualification exams.
- Candidates who fail a written exam must wait a period of five calendar days (previously three days) to reschedule the same exam.
- Candidates who pass a CCIE written exam must wait a minimum of six months before taking the same number exam. (Though rare, this may occur in certain recertification situations.)

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) today announced it is inviting technology professionals with expertise in radio frequency identification (RFID) to participate in the development process for a new professional certification of RFID skills.
"The assistance of subject matter experts is crucial in developing the strong quality content that a certification requires," said David Sommer, vice president, electronic commerce, CompTIA. "These experts will help us create a certification that validates an RFID technologist's knowledge and skills in the areas of installation, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of hardware and software functionality of RFID products."
Subject matter experts will meet at CompTIA world headquarters in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., May 31 though June 2 to conduct a job task analysis for the RFID certification. This effort will identify the knowledge and skills standards individuals should have to be proficient in RFID technology.
To participate in the certification development process, individuals must have at least three years of experience in RFID technology, such as installing and implementing RFID systems. Some 60,000 businesses are facing RFID usage mandates from their trading partners in the next three to five years, according to industry estimates. But a February survey of CompTIA members found that 80 percent of companies do not believe there are sufficient numbers of professionals skilled in RFID to hire from today. In addition, 53 percent of companies said this lack of talent will have a negative impact on the adoption of RFID technology in the next two to three years.
CompTIA is working with a number of organizations with leadership positions in the RFID market to develop the certification for the RFID workforce. These organizations include the Association for Automatic Identification and Mobility (AIM Global); Briljent, LLC; FC Business Systems; Intermec Technologies Corporation; ODIN technologies; OTA Training; RFID4U (a division of eSmart Source, Inc.); RFID Journal; ScanSource, Inc.; Sparkice; Symbol Technologies, Inc.; and Texas Instruments Incorporated.
The CompTIA RFID certification is expected to be available in late 2005 or early 2006.

Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., May 1, 2005 — The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) launched its new Network+™ certification exam today. The updated CompTIA Network+ exam tests for technical ability and skill in the networking environment in use today and planned for tomorrow. For example, the updated exam covers fast-growing technologies such as wireless networking and gigabit Ethernet.
“The new exam reflects today’s reality that network administrators are coping with rapidly changing technologies in networks, handheld devices and application development,” said Neill Hopkins, vice president, skills development, CompTIA. “The explosion of wireless within the enterprise has allowed organizations to become more creative with mobile computing. We’ve also seen a surge in demand for 10-gigabit networking from corporations, research labs and governments.”
The new exam is the end-product of a far-reaching revision process that included analysis of network administrator job tasks; as well as the input of subject matter experts knowledgeable in the most prevalent networking technologies, applications and best practices in use today. The skills and knowledge measured by this examination were derived from an industry-wide job task analysis and validated through a survey of more than 2,500 networking professionals.
The new exam tests for foundational knowledge in important areas such as media, network topology, protocols, services, and features and functions of various networking components.
More than 150,000 IT professionals around the world are CompTIA Network+ certified. CompTIA Network+ certification is incorporated into the certifications tracks of many leading hardware and software vendors. It also is the certification most often recommended by community colleges and training organizations for individuals interested in a career in information technology (IT).
CompTIA Network+ is among the certifications most frequently recommended by community colleges and training organizations to those pursuing a career in IT. More than 150,000 people across the globe hold this certificate. CompTIA Network+ is also incorporated into certification tracks by leading hardware and software suppliers. Microsoft, for example, includes CompTIA Network+ as an elective in its MCSA certification track.

The outgoing CompTIA Network+ exam (N10-002), which is based on objectives published in 2001, will remain live until June 30, 2005, giving those who studied to those objectives a reasonable time to take the exam. After that date, only the new exam (N10-003) will be available.

Following a year of research and development, the revised CompTIA Linux+™ certification exam, which goes live today, might just become the standard entry-level certification for commercial applications of Linux.
The revised CompTIA Linux+ exam covers approximately 90 percent of the problems that technicians, help desk staff, and system administrators routinely encounter today with commercial Linux applications from Novell’s SUSE Linux, Red Hat, Mandrake, and TurboLinux.
In concert with the industry’s need for deeper Linux expertise, CompTIA Linux+ certifies an equivalent experience of six to 12 months with Linux, up from the original exam’s experience level of six months. The revised exam gives greater weight to security, installation, configuration, and documentation, while decreasing emphasis on hardware.
“The new CompTIA Linux+ exam is an outstanding example of an industry-led exam development process, designed and built with input from employers who understand the importance of skill validation for an enterprise ready platform such as Linux,” said Dan Veitkus, Vice President, Novell Training Services.
The most notable differences between the original CompTIA Linux+ exam based on 2001 objectives and the revised exam based on 2004 objectives are the additional domains on security and documentation, the expansion of domains on installation and configuration, and a decrease in the emphasis on hardware.
The CompTIA Linux+ certified individual will have the knowledge to implement security options on client systems, configure security-related files, and grasp common security practices. In addition, they will have the knowledge necessary to determine installation methods, select appropriate settings, protocols, and software packages. The individual has demonstrated proficiency in everyday management of Linux-based clients and basic management of server systems.
The older version of the exam, which tests against the 2001 Exam Objectives, will continue to be offered as an alternative to the new exam only through the end of July 2005.
“Certification gives the employer a means of validating skills when making decisions on hiring and promotion, while offering the IT professional an independent verification of knowledge mastery,” said Neill Hopkins, vice president of skills development, CompTIA. “This new exam does both admirably at a time when the demand for Linux expertise is growing.”

According to sources Skillsoft swung a mean scythe at their Smart Certify division, cutting an unknown number of employees. A quick check on the Skillsoft web site mined this gem from a press release dated Monday, March 14th 2005. Apparently a deal is imminent to sell Smart Certify to an unknown suitor, but if the deal isn't consummated, SkillSoft plans to shut them down. The release did say that any current contractual obligations would be serviced and fulfilled, and in the case of a sale would continue a reseller arrangement with the new company. There is a plan to shut down SmartCertify completely if the sale does not go through.
What does it mean for the IT certification industry? Many companies have experienced significant loss of revenue since the heydeys in the late 90's, however just as Transcender was asset sold this time last year, another heavyweight in the industry felled would shake the industry to its core.
SMARTCERTIFY SUBSIDIARY PENDING SALE TRANSACTION
"The Company has entered into a non-binding letter of intent with respect to the sale of its retail IT certification business, SmartCertify. In the event the transaction is not consummated as anticipated, the Company will shut down the operation. As previously noted in our fiscal 2005 third quarter earnings release, the SmartCertify IT Certification focused direct-to-consumer business has contributed less revenue than expected. This planned action will allow us to fully focus our attention and resources on our core enterprise business. The Company engaged an investment banker to assist it in eliciting acquisition proposals for this business and has progressed discussions with a buyer to the point where the Company expects to consummate a transaction in the fiscal 2006 first quarter. The Company is now working on finalizing sale terms with the potential purchaser. If SmartCertify is sold, SkillSoft will maintain a reseller arrangement with the new organization. If the Company were to shutdown the operation, a plan to do so would be established. Such plan would outline a timeline and schedule of costs associated with the shutdown. The Company would not maintain a reseller arrangement under a shutdown scenario. In either a shutdown or a sale scenario, the Company will maintain the existing customer contracts and service those contracts until the contractual obligation is fulfilled. This decision process is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of fiscal 2006. The current fiscal 2006 financial targets, detailed below, assume SmartCertify’s full operation for the fiscal 2006 first quarter and a reseller arrangement for the remaining three quarters of fiscal 2006. The accounting for this transaction is currently being reviewed, and any effect on the fiscal 2005 or 2006 earnings outlook would be announced after the finalization of the transaction. Whether SmartCertify is sold or shutdown, the Company anticipates recognizing revenue from the deferred revenue balance related to direct-to-consumer business over the succeeding 18 to 24 months following the sale or shutdown. Substantially all of the sales, marketing and administrative costs, on a going forward basis following a sale or shutdown, will be eliminated."
The certification industry has experienced considerable shrinkage in the last four or five years, mostly due to the loss of IT jobs to economic restructuring such as offshoring and outsourcing. What growth there is seems to be the province of smaller companies with business models more suited to a market slowdown. If one was to use advertising exposure as an indicator, those companies would include ExamForce, Train Signal, Boson and others. Each has a different set of offerings and business model, but seem to be thriving while the giants of this market niche continue to falter.

CompTIA Expands Convergence Industry Initiatives
Business best practices tools, skills development are top priorities for 2005
Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., January 25, 2005 – The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) today announced it will expand its efforts in 2005 to promote the growth of convergent technologies in business and residential settings. Key areas of focus for the coming year will include developing new business best practices tools for solutions providers selling convergent technologies; and skills development and certification programs for professionals working with convergent technologies
“Voice-over-IP telephony, unified communications, presence solutions and other applications that span the wireline and wireless worlds are clearly poised for broad deployment in both the business and consumer markets,” said Brian McCarthy, chief operating officer, CompTIA. “The variety and types of converged applications that will be introduced in the coming months and years are limited only by the imaginations of solutions providers and their customers. CompTIA is committed to working with our members to provide them with the business tools and skills necessary for them to thrive in this brave new world of communications.”
This expanded effort by CompTIA mirrors significant positive industry trends in the convergence arena. For example:
- By 2006, two-thirds of the Global 2000 companies will have started deployment of voice-over-IP to the desktop. (Deloitte Services, November 2004)
- The total market value for services using voice over IP is forecast to grow almost ten-fold in revenue terms over the next five years as the technology evolves from a replacement for traditional telephony to providing converged services to the home and desktop. (Juniper Research, May 2004)
CompTIA is currently working with leaders in the convergent technologies market to evaluate the need for a vendor-neutral certification that would validate both the technical knowledge and business application skills sets most in demand today and in the future by manufacturers and their channel partners. To date, more than 20 organizations – including original equipment manufacturers, education institutions, distributors, and solutions providers – have been involved in this initiative.
In February, CompTIA will bring industry leaders together to strategize on the design of a vendor-neutral convergence certification. Workshop participants will discuss in detail the scope and structure of an industry accepted convergence certification, such as the skills required to achieve such a certification; and the level of on-the-job experience for certification candidates.
In the area of business best practices, the CompTIA Convergence Group is focusing on network assessment methodologies that will help solutions providers, interconnect dealers and systems integrators provide their customers with customized convergent technologies solutions.
One of the obstacles to successful deployment of IP-based services is the failure to evaluate whether existing customer bandwidth and networks can accommodate converged voice, data and video traffic. The network assessment initiative will provide CompTIA members with guidance on how they can conduct a comprehensive analysis of a customer’s existing communications system; and what steps need to be taken to assure that new IP-based communications solutions meet the customer’s expectations and requirements.
CompTIA's Public Policy Group is actively engaged in representing the interests of convergence industry before national and international government agencies considering if and how VoIP services should be regulated. One of the Public Policy Group’s top priorities for 2005 is to keep Congress, the Federal Communications Commission and other lawmakers from regulating VoIP and related services.

Cisco Systems announced the latest addition to its professional-level certifications: The Cisco Certified Voice Professional (CCVP). The new voice certification was created in response to the heightened customer and channel partner demand for knowledgeable network professionals who can install, configure, operate and support complex Internet Protocol telephony systems.
The CCVP certification recognizes the increased importance placed on today's IT professionals who are responsible for integrating voice technology into underlying network architectures. Individuals who earn a CCVP certification can help create a telephony solution that's transparent, scalable and manageable.
“To achieve the many benefits of a converged data, voice and video network, organizations need network professionals with the right mix of skills,” said Don Field, director of certifications at Cisco. “Earning a CCVP certification validates a robust set of skills in implementing, operating, configuring and troubleshooting a converged IP network.”
The CCVP courses and exams provide a comprehensive curriculum focused on Cisco CallManager call-processing systems, quality of service (QoS), gateways, gatekeepers, IP phones and voice applications and utilities on Cisco routers and Cisco Catalyst switches. CCVP certification is targeted to field engineers, network engineers, systems engineers, telecommunications equipment installers and others who currently install, configure and support IP telephony solutions, private branch exchanges (PBXs) and voicemail systems.
Candidates must demonstrate a high level of expertise with complex enterprise CallManager and IP networks. This certification also requires demonstration of the use of Cisco QoS features such as queuing, congestion avoidance, traffic policing, shaping and link-efficiency mechanisms in optimizing network traffic for voice and other related applications. Additionally, individuals will be required to verify their knowledge and skills in configuring Cisco IOS Software for managing voice traffic on IP networks using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), H.323 standards-based IP telephony systems and Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) group of protocols on voice-over-IP (VoIP) infrastructures.
Earning a CCVP certification requires holding an active Cisco associate-level CCNA certification and passing five additional exams. The following courses and exams comprise the CCVP certification:

- 642-432 CVOICE-Cisco Voice Over IP
- 642-425 IPTT-IP Telephony Troubleshooting
- 642-444 CIPT-Cisco IP Telephony

With the new version of the CompTIA Server+ certification examination set to debut on February 14, CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association has released the CompTIA Server+TM Supplemental Exam Guide covering the new objectives for the CompTIA Server+ 2005 exam. The Supplemental Guide bridges the gap between the CompTIA Server+ training materials currently available and the additional items covered on the new CompTIA Server+ certification exam.

New Model for Female Recruitment and Retention in High-Tech Industry
Although women constitute more than half of the population, they make up only 35 percent of the IT workforce in the United States. Additionally, according to the Computing Research Association, less than a fifth of undergraduates in college computer science programs are female. To address this discrepancy, the Florida Department of Education and Cisco Networking Academy today announced the Girls Get IT Initiative in Florida to increase female recruitment and retention in IT.
"To succeed in today's increasingly digital society, students must learn to use tools essential to everyday life and the workplace," said David Armstrong, Chancellor of the Florida Community College and Workforce Education System. "Demonstrating the importance of IT to young women is crucial to their professional development because of the fact that information technology underpins nearly every other industry and its presence is not likely to be diminished in the future."
The group will work with the Florida Department of Education to research, develop and implement a framework to help raise female student participation and graduation rates in IT. Four regional Networking Academy sites are targeted for initial participation including: Florida Community College of Jacksonville; North Florida Community College; Broward County Community College; and Valencia Community College. Through the Florida Community College and Workforce Education System, educators, administrators and guidance counselors will be empowered with access to teaching methods designed to increase awareness of career and education opportunities for women in technology.
"According to the American Association of University Women based in Washington, D.C., women receive less than 28 percent of the bachelors degrees in computer science," said Gene Longo, senior manager of Cisco Networking Academy Field Operations. "This is a decrease from a high of 37 percent in 1984. Computer science is the only field in which women's participation has actually decreased over time. The Cisco Networking Academy is committed to narrowing the gender gap in technology training and careers. The main objective of the Girls Get IT Initiative is to introduce more female students to technology in K-12 and college, and to ignite more excitement about potential careers in technology."
The initiative will provide dedicated support personnel for program outreach to students, guidance counselors and parents to create interest in IT. Activities including Girls in IT Summits, IT Camps and Computer Clubs for students will facilitate opportunities for recruitment in middle schools and high schools. The program will also provide greater collaboration among high schools, community colleges and industry to promote workforce development. Because Florida has one of the most sophisticated student tracking systems in the country, the initiative will track the recruitment, retention and career path of women.
John Winn, Commissioner of Education for the State of Florida added, "I applaud Cisco for their innovation and for stepping forward to address the need to recruit and retain females in the field of Information Technology. IT is one of Florida's targeted industries for economic development. This combined effort is an example of the way our Community College and Workforce Education System works to meet the needs of our state's economy."
"Part of the challenge of getting girls interested in IT is showing them how the subject matter is relevant to their lives and interests," said Marcia Sitcoske, director of the Creative Learning Studios at Cisco. "It should be looked at more as a component of their overall academic career. It's not just engineering and science. There are a lot of business programs and MBA programs that are incorporating IT as part of a career path. That's why outreach is so essential."
"Students are still generally unfamiliar with the workplace and opportunities available to them," said Rick Kearney, chairman of the Florida IT Board. "This is especially the case for young girls. There is a surprising absence of awareness of engineering and technology-type jobs, and what is involved with these careers on a day-to-day basis. This initiative will help students realize the myriad of social issues that are solved through technology, to gain insight from mentors, and collaborate in unconventional ways. We look forward to retaining these young girls' skills in Florida once they graduate from college and become part of the work force."
The Cisco Networking Academy Program presents an excellent opportunity to help narrow the gender gap and increase female participation in the Internet economy. The Girls Get IT Initiative is part of a larger Cisco initiative focused on increasing females' access to IT training and career opportunities, beginning with the Cisco Networking Academy Program.
