Fiorina Steps Down as HP CEO Read More Comments
Posted by Ice on Feb, 09 2005 - 12:18

Carly Fiorina was canned today by the board of directors at HP after her ill-fated acquisition of Compaq failed to generate the synergies she boasted about during her tenure.

Fiorina had been under fire for some time by the board, who had vociferously opposed the merger as they felt it would not be a good fit for their more vertical business units such as printing and imaging.

HP, always known as an engineering company, should get back to its roots and focus on the higher margin business units that brought it to prominence in the tech industry. Although the press release danced around the issue with words such as "accelerating the strategy" and that Fiorina "...had a strategic vision and put in place a plan that has given HP the capabilities to compete and win" it was widely known that the board had become increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress in increasing revenue and profits. So typical of the myopic board of directors in most large companies nowadays.

Looks like the folks in the printer and imaging divisions will be partying like rockstars this week, as they had been the most vocal opponents of her "strategic vision". Shares were up 11% in morning trading on the news.

Fiorina will be replaced at least tentatively by current CFO Robert Wayman

Cisco Exceeds 170,000 IP Phone Shipments & Takes No. 1 Spot in Australia Read More Comments
Posted by NAM on Oct, 28 2004 - 16:52

70,000 IP Phones shipped in the past nine months as Australia becomes the first market for Cisco to achieve business telephony market leadership

SYDNEY - October 28, 2004 - Cisco Systems, ® announced today it has now shipped more than 170,000 Internet Protocol (IP) phones to more than 500 customers across a diverse cross-section of industries in Australia.

For the first time, Cisco has become the market leader in all business telephony, as well as increasing its lead in IP telephony.

According to analysis by Frost & Sullivan, in a recent report titled "Asia Pacific Enterprise Telephony Equipment Markets - 2004, First Half," Cisco now leads the business telephony market in Australia, with a 19.9 percent market share. The study covers all phones systems sold to businesses, including key telephone systems, traditional Private Branch Exchange (PBX), IP enabled PBX and Pure-IP telephony.

In IP Telephony, Cisco continues to be the leading vendor in the Australian business voice market, holding a 47 percent market share, according to Frost & Sullivan.

Cisco Australia and New Zealand managing director, Ross Fowler, said Australian businesses are abandoning the inefficient PBX-based telephony and are adopting feature-rich IP systems to reduce operational costs and enable productivity enhancing applications, beyond dial tone.

Mr Fowler said; "The trend towards IP based communications is irreversible, and it is shown in the market analysis by Frost and Sullivan. Cisco only plays in pure-IP Telephony but we lead the market in all business telephony. Australia is the first global market where Cisco has achieved total business telephony leadership."

Foad Fadaghi, Senior Industry Analyst with Frost & Sullivan Australia, said the market for IP Telephony continues to grow strongly in Australia and enterprises are becoming more sophisticated in their usage of IP communications

"Australian businesses are now entering a new phase of IP-based efficiency as previously disparate communications systems continue to converge, improving the user experience by bringing together voice mail, e-mail, video conferencing and increasingly vertical and enterprise applications," Mr Fadaghi said.

Cisco's channel reseller specialisation program, which requires significant training and resource allocation from Cisco's 28 Australian channel partners, also helps ensure that IP Telephony rollouts are designed and deployed to aim for high levels of customer satisfaction.

Cisco has more than 500 customers using IP Telephony in Australia. Cisco's customers in this market include Freehills legal service, Woodside, Servcorp, AMP, Lend Lease and Arnott's. Cisco has now sold more than three million IP phones across the world.

Citrix MetaFrame Password Manager Improves Secure Access Read More Comments
Posted by NAM on Oct, 04 2004 - 20:54

Customers Include ABM Industries Inc., March of Dimes, Masco Corp., Olympus America and U.S. Air Force

Today at Citrix iForum™ Global 2004, Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS), the global leader in access infrastructure solutions, revealed strong demand for its Citrix® MetaFrame® Password Manager software, with more than 250 customers having implemented the product in its first year of release. Now more than ever, companies are recognizing the benefits of having an efficient single sign-on solution to access password-protected applications with increased security and reduced time spent resetting forgotten passwords. The 250 customers represent a range of vertical markets as well as government agencies, including ABM Industries Inc., March of Dimes, Masco Corp., Olympus America and U.S. Air Force.

Organizations often take the first step in improving network security by enforcing the use of passwords to access sensitive data and proprietary applications. With corporate end users collectively keeping track of hundreds of distinct passwords, this first step creates a tremendous burden on IT managers to impose stringent password policies and reset passwords when they are forgotten. For a typical mid-size organization of 1,000 employees, each of whom forgets a single password at least once a year, the help desk ends up devoting valuable time to resetting employee passwords, this is time diverted from other critical business and IT demands.

”Exploding support costs are driving organizations to view password management as a critical business concern,” said Earl Perkins, vice president with META Group, a leading provider of IT research, advisory services and strategic consulting. “Today nearly two in five help desk calls relate to user identification and authentication problems. With an average price of $25 a call, measures that eliminate these problems such as the single sign-on feature in many identity management products create compelling benefits including lower administrative costs, increased employee productivity and higher levels of security.”

MetaFrame Password Manager, a key component of the Citrix MetaFrame Access Suite, allows IT users to authenticate once with a single password, automatically logging them into password-protected information systems, enforcing password policies, and even automating end-user tasks, including password changes. Masco Corp., one of the world’s largest manufacturers of brand-name home products with $11 billion in annual sales, deployed MetaFrame Password Manager in its accounting department to help with key corporate compliance legislation.

”Masco’s IT staff of 100 serves 16,000 employees in roughly 400 locations throughout the U.S., offering full help desk support for all kinds of problems — including dealing with end-user passwords,” said Charles Redding, chief information officer of Masco. “We rolled out Password Manager to the accounting division, which must strictly comply with regulatory legislation such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, so these critical employees wouldn’t be tempted to choose weak passwords or write passwords on notes pasted to their computers. With Citrix’s single sign-on solution we can now protect sensitive data and applications by implementing extremely strong passwords, centralize the burden of password management and maintenance, and completely eliminate calls to the help desk for forgotten passwords.”
